How does the song go again? :)
"Anything you can do I can do better;
I can do anything better than you."
Oh, Annie Get Your Gun... How true it is...
And so that was the song stuck in my head last night as I set out determined to run six miles...
Wanna know why THAT was the chorus I kept singing?

So recently, a friend and I entered into a "friendly" comeptition to see who could run the most miles. We both have Nike Plus GPS watches to track our runs, so it's easy to follow each other's progress and hold each other accountable.
Every couple of days I give him shit about not running enough. And he gives it right back. It's mutual.
And motivating.
Yesterday was one of those days where I had decided "I'm too busy for a long run. It's going to be too late by the time I get home to do a long run... I'll just do a mile or two... Just enough to keep the runstreak alive..."
And so, after spending 5 hours fixing my truck with my cousin, I headed out on the hour long drive back home from his house. It was 7:00pm and I wouldn't be home until about 8:00pm, with not real motivation to run. The runstreak was my only motivation to get out and do my mandatory mile.
Until my phone chirps at me with a text message. A friendly reminder that I had better get started running because he had started training and there was no way I was going to be able to keep up the mileage. In the infamous words of Barney Stinson (HIMYM)...
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
So what was a planned two mile run became a six mile trail run with my dogs. And I couldn't have been happier. Honestly. It was dark and I probably should have brought my headlamp, but I was so grateful to have gotten the six miles in. And on a Monday night, no less!
I think everyone needs that one person, or maybe even a few people, who remind them and motivate them to get their butts into gear and just do the work. When you feel like you're too tired. Or when you just feel lazy and unmotivated. Someone to push you to the place where you WANT to be anyways.
And it helps that I'm a fairly competitive person. I hate (READ: HATE!) losing and to think that I might be giving up an opportunity for more miles... That he might actually beat me... Nope. Can't let it happen. :)
So, if he happens to read this:
You're gonna lose. Just accept it now. You can go quietly or with a fight.
But I promise you this: I'm gonna win. :)
According to my Nike+ GPS Watch:
Distance: 6.03 miles
Time: 1:05:55
Average Pace: 10:56 / mile
