MY HOT, SWEATY LOVE AFFAIR...

With Hot Yoga.

Get your mind out of the gutter!

Ok, so maybe that title was misleading.  It happens.  But it's certainly not inaccurate.

I started doing hot yoga just over a year ago.  A friend of mine had begun taking a community class at a local hot yoga studio in East Grand Rapids, Michigan called Funky Buddha.

If you live in West Michigan, I strongly recommend it.  I LOVED classes there!

Anyways...

So, I joined my friend for a few community classes.  I loved them because they were on Sunday nights, only $5 a class and all the money went to local charities.  The only downsides were that the classes were usually packed (because they were so cheap) and that East Grand Rapids was a pretty long drive for me.

So I was SUPER EXCITED when they announced they were going to open a location in Holland!  Especially since they were offering a Groupon for new members.  I loved getting my sweat on and adding in some flexibility to go with the strength I was building through running and lifting.  I found that hot yoga was great not only for my body, but also for helping my clear my mind after a long day.

Some of you might be asking yourself...

What exactly is hot yoga anyways?!

Hot yoga is a form of yoga that takes traditional yoga poses but has them done in a room where the temperature is heated towards the 90 degree range and humidity is increased substantially.   Bikram Hot Yoga is the most common kind and is based off the concepts developed by Bikram Choudhury.  You repeat the series of 26 moves, although every class varies in the moves that are used and the order and repetition of the moves.  Each teacher has their own preference for how they arrange and practitioners are encouraged to push themselves only as far as they feel comfortable.  Not every class does all 26 moves, and often, more traditional yoga poses are incorporated as well.

Anyways, the point is!

When I injured my knee, I got out of the habit of running.  And I got LAZY.

Plus, I was worried about trying to build my knee back up to its full strength.  So while I looked at my cross training options, I thought I should try getting back in to hot yoga!

And I'm so glad I did!!!  It was great to give myself that moment every day, not only to stretch and improve my strength, flexibility, and balance, but also to clear my head.

If you're looking for something to compliment your running, I strongly suggest giving hot yoga a try.  I don't think you'll regret it!  And most of the studios have introductory offers to give you an opportunity to try it out.

Here in Nashville, I just recently joined Epic Yoga and enjoyed their classes.  I'm still going to try out other studios, because hey, you don't buy the first car you drive, right?  Plus, I'm a sucked for an intro deal, so I like to try and use the intro deals until I figure out where I want to spend my money.  Because word to the wise:  Hot Yoga Is Not Cheap.

But I will tell you that's a fabulous way to get your sweat on, especially in the winter months.  Nothing like stepping in to a room that's heated to 95 degrees when it's 32 outside!

Anyways, if you like sweating and you wanna try a new way to cross train - GET HOT AND SWEATY!

Till next time!

My sister use to do hot yoga and loved it. I've always wanted to try but the classes never fell at times I Could take them. Who doesn't want to sweat like a pig and look like a Fox. Love that saying.

Lacy, I totally get it! Morning classes are particularly hard because there's no way around it - when you finish a hot yoga session, you are in SERIOUS need of a shower! Some studios offer class packages though and then maybe you could drop in on a weekend. You would love it! :)
