Mine happens to be caffeine. Although, to be specific, I prefer my caffeine in one form over all others: Coca-Cola.
I will accept other forms of caffeine: Tea, Mountain Dew, Pepsi, Surge, Volt...
Notice I didn't say coffee? Hate the stuff. Can't stand it. Possibly the once source of caffeine I refuse to consume.
But the rest of it?!?! SEND IT MY WAY!
Yupp. I know. But you know what else is bad for me? Going to jail when I punch someone because I haven't had enough caffeine yet that day. That ends poorly, my friends.
And so, not a day goes by that I don't consume caffeine in one of its fabulous forms. Like most addicts, I go through phases...
"OK, self! Listen up! You're giving up Coke! You're going cold-turkey! Well, ok, maybe one can a day isn't so bad... You can live on one can a day, right?"
And so it inevitably goes, cyclical, where I reduce my consumption or change forms of caffeine. (Surely, drinking caffeinated tea is healthier for me than drinking a can of Mountain Dew, right?)
But we always come back together, caffeine and I. In fact, some days I manage to convince myself I run BETTER when I've chugged a Red Bull right before a run... Those days generally don't end well...
Alas, like a doctor who smokes, even though she knows its bad for her, I continue to sip my caffeinated drinks... In fact, as I type this, I'm sitting at Starbucks.... Irony, at it's finest.
Besides, they sell all sorts of caffeinated products for runners, right? And there are several articles that show that caffeine can actually be GOOD for a runner... See here and here! So I guess that I'll try not too feel too guilty about it when I take one last sip of my beverage of choice before my run tonight... CHEERS!
