So despite the fact that I injured my knee less than two months ago...
And that my knee caused me some pretty bad pain running a 6k only a week before... I thought a 6-miler sounded like a genius idea. Or at least it did when I had originally signed up for it... Mariah Carey's iconic "All I Want For Christmas" may be the title of this post, but it definitely runs more along along the lines of my personal all-time favorite Christmas Song, "Santa Baby."
You choose. Eartha Kitt, Marilyn Monroe, or Bettie Boop. All good. And this was a pretty good year for me, running wise. Next year I could be just as good, if you'll check off my Christmas list... Boo doo bee doop! So I will be the first to tell you, I am resistant to anything that to me seems like a "fad."
And for the longest time, that included foam rolling. A friend of mine is a Physical Therapy Assistant. (Those who have read my blog before will know this is my girl Coley.) Well, she's a pretty serious runner. And by that I mean that she takes running very seriously. I'm more of a "go out and wing it" kind of gal myself. But Coley has training plans and regimes that she follows. Religiously. It's not too often our runs line up together, but we have run a few races together in the past and that's usually where the overlap occurs. I promise, we're getting to the part about foam rolling... Ok, so it's been awhile, but I figure it's prolly about time to do my recap of #RagnarTN!
So, as I may have mentioned previously, I just recently moved to Tennessee! WOOT WOOT! Livin' the big life south of the Mason Dixon, y'all! So what better way to fully immerse myself into southern culture and make some running friends along the way than to join a Ragnar Team? Yeah, that seems both sane and logical... Ok, I've never claimed to be either. :) So, it's winter time.
And despite that fact that I now live south of the Mason-Dixon, I've decided it's still too damn cold. Which means this is the time of year I move most of my training to the indoors. And luckily, my Planet Fitness membership followed me to Nashville and there happens to be a gym just down the road and around the corner. The perks of being a Black Card member, I suppose! And, because as all runners know, the treadmill (from here on out referred to as the "dreadmill") is the bane of my existence, winter is the time of year when I generally tend to focus more on weight training than on running. There are a few reasons for this... So a few weeks ago, one of my Ragnar Tennessee vanmates sent out an email saying she was running a race and did we wall want to have a reunion and run it with her?
HECK YES! I thought it would be nice to see some of my vanmates again and also had been looking for a race to add to my schedule I find that I run more often when I have an event coming up. There's just something about a deadline to motivate you. Like, "Jessica, you have a race this weekend... Maybe you should actually run?" With Hot Yoga.
Get your mind out of the gutter! Ok, so maybe that title was misleading. It happens. But it's certainly not inaccurate. I started doing hot yoga just over a year ago. A friend of mine had begun taking a community class at a local hot yoga studio in East Grand Rapids, Michigan called Funky Buddha. If you live in West Michigan, I strongly recommend it. I LOVED classes there! Anyways... Today's post is a brief one, and for once, there won't be any pictures.
Which, if you've read my blog at all before, is very out of character. I LOVE PICTURES. But the point is, that while out running today, I passed by a local golf driving range. As I ran past, I flashed back in my mind to a moment that had happened this morning. As I was driving to work, I drove past this particular driving range and was struck by the beauty of it. A driving range? Beauty? For someone who doesn't enjoy golf, it was a weird pairing. But it truly was. The driving range is ringed with high lights over a large grassy field. And this morning, there was a low fog that had been suspended over the field. They way the lights were reflected on the fog just struck me and I was compelled. I said to myself: I should stop and take a picture of that. Yepp.
The title kind says it all, but it's a pretty good story, so I guess I'll go on. So, as a result of my recent knee injury, I haven't been running much (read: none). But, the pupper still needs to get her runs in. I've always thought that when I go out on my trail runs with her, I should throw my Nike+ GPS watch on her to track her distance compared to mine. I've often joked with people that if I run 6 miles, she's probably doing more like 10 or 12 miles. It's part of her breed. Rory is an English Pointer and they are bred to be hunted from horseback in the great prairies out west. |
